THE WATERS OF LIFE
Perhaps the prophet Isaiah was in a marketplace and saw merchants hawking skins
full of water.
Water was very precious and essential to life. If one had no money to buy and no
other source, he would soon die. I would imagine that the law of supply and demand
dictated that this water sold for a high price. Perhaps this stirred Isaiah and he
cried out,
Isaiah 55:1. Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the
waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat;
yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price
It appears that the natural water being sold didn't really satisfy.
People were paying their hard earned money for something that would not quench
their thirst. An appeal is made to simply hearken to the voice of the Lord
and receive spiritual waters that do satisfy. Price is no object. A higher price
than we could ever pay, has already been paid. Jesus bought us the waters
of life with His own blood.
Isaiah 55: 2 Wherefore do ye spend money for [that which is] not
bread? and your labour for [that which] satisfieth not?
hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye [that which is] good,
and let your soul delight itself in fatness.
When we incline our ear, God covenants with us. Jesus declared that He would in no
way cast out the one who came to Him (John 6:37). That sounds like a pretty solid
covenant to me.
Isaiah 55: 3 Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul
shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with
you, [even] the sure mercies of David.
Jesus was attending The Feast of Tabernacles. A ritual was performed that was to remind
the people of the water that came from the rock in the wilderness. Water was carried
from the pool of Saloam and poured out as an offering before the Lord.
We remember that Moses smote the Rock, (Ex.17:6), and was to speak to the
Rock ( Num.20:8).The apostle Paul tells us that that Rock which followed them in
the desert was Christ (I Cor. 10:4). Jesus was smitten on Calvary and we need only to
speak to Him to receive the Waters of His Spirit.
John 7:37. In the last day, that great [day] of the feast,
Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him
come unto me, and drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said,
out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive:
for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
This was a pretty bold statement for a carpenter to be making. It stirred and divided
the people. Some believed on Him and others wanted to kill Him. Soldiers were sent to
arrest Him and came back empty handed. Their only excuse was "Never man spake like
this man" (John 7:46).
On another occasion, Jesus was traveling from Judea to Galilee. Most of the
devout people who made this trip bypassed Samaria which was between these two regions.
Scripture simply says that Jesus had need to go through Samaria.
I believe that He knew He would meet a lonely sinful woman at a well. Here He would
have a conversation with her that would change her life and cause the men of the city
to hear and believe on Him. Jesus made another bold statement,
John 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest
the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to
drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have
given thee living water.
The question then can be asked, "Who is this man who talks so boldly."
If per chance He is who He says He is, it would be good to listen to Him.
Who is He?
The Creator (Jn 1:10; Col. 1:16)
The Redeemer (Isa.12:2)
The Comforter and Sustainer (Jn. 14:17-18)
The Almighty Rev. 1:8)
The Alpha and Omega, The Beginning and Ending ,The First and the last(Rev 21:6,22:13)
The Wisdom and Righteousness of God (I Cor. 1:30)
The Word made Flesh (Jn 1:1,14)
The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace, The Mighty God (Isa. 9;6)
Emmanuel (Isa. 7:14)
He is God who was manifested in the flesh,..
..believed on in the world, received up up into glory (I Tim. 3:16).
He was "My Lord and my God" to St. Thomas (Jn. 20:28).
He is the "Blessed and Only Potentate, the
King of Kings and Lord of Lords" (I Tim. 6:15-16)
He is the Only Wise God (I Tim. 1:17).
He is "Over all God Blessed forever" (Ro. 9:5).
He is the "Great God and Savior" (Tit. 2:13)
Jesus was and is all of the above,
but He went and sought out this lonely women as she was drawing water.
He knew who she was and what she had been doing.
He knows us just as well. The promise He made to her extends to us. He wants
to give us Living Water so that we'll never be thirsty again. He wants to give us
of His Spirit.
He promised it would be in us springing up into everlasting life.
John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall
give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give
him shall be in him a well of water springing up into
everlasting life.
The prophet Ezekiel saw the waters of the Spirit of God as a mighty river that
couldn't be passed over.
He stated that everything the waters touched lived.
Ezek. 47:5 Afterward he measured a thousand; [and it was] a
river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen,
waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over.
Jesus issues an invitation from the throne of God. He is eager to
give us the waters of life, if we'll only come to Him and ask!
Revelation 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega,
the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain
of the water of life freely.
Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that
heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will,
let him take the water of life freely.
The purpose of About-Him.Com is to glorify the Lord Jesus
Christ whom we preach as the Almighty God manifest in the flesh.
It is our desire that everything presented on these pages increases your
faith in our God and Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
