Thoughts on Psalms 19 Psalms 19:1 ¶ «To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.» The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. In the first six verses of Psalms 19, the Psalmist David extols the glory of God as seen in His creation. The heavens declare His glory and the firmament shows His handy work. The sun appears everyday according to the schedule that God appointed at creation and warms all that it comes in contact with. As a result, our crops flourish in season to set food on our tables, etc. etc. The heavenly bodies are precise in their movement without variance which allowed ancient mariners to sail into uncharted waters in their discovery of new worlds. Our modern day scientists rely on the known position of these heavenly bodies in firing rockets to the moon and beyond. All because of the creation of a mighty God in whom there is no variance or shadow of turning (Jas. 1:17). Paul tells us in Romans 1:19-20 that the visible creation that is all around us declares the eternal power and Godhead (Deity) of our Lord. When we look at the marvels around us, we realize that it all couldn’t have happened by accident. Romans 1:19 ¶ Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: When we desire to know more of the One who spoke the worlds into existence, we have the record that He has given us in His word. In Psalms 19:7-11 the psalmist extols the virtue of God’s law with several synonymous phrases. The law of the Lord is perfect converting the soul. The Ten Commandments contain all that is necessary to live a life that is pleasing to God. This was rightly stated by a lawyer who was trying to trip up Jesus. Luke 10:27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. 28 And he (Jesus) said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. When we hide the word of God in our hearts, His Holy Spirit brings to remembrance all that He has commanded and how He acted and reacted in all manner of situations. We may be very simple in our intellect, but the person who takes God at His word, far surpasses the greatest intellectuals of this world. Jesus said that God had hidden His mysteries from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes (Mt. 11:25). The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: Man’s laws are ever changing and never consistent. Consider the current proposed health care legislation, which runs up to 2000 pages or more. Looking at the past performance of congress, we can almost guarantee that there will be some surprises stuck in the text at the last moment. God’s word never changes and has no such surprises. The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. Many people of the world serve dead gods. Many religions appeal to the baser instincts of man. God gave us His word as a pattern to live by so that we might be conformed to His image and live with Him eternally. God cannot tolerate sin, but He made a provision for it, the precious blood of Jesus. He bore our sins, and presents us righteous before God. If we sin, thank God, Jesus is our Advocate who pleads our cause and calls us to repentance and restoration (I John 2:1-6). The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: The fear of the Lord can be considered in two ways. Hopefully we have a healthy reverential respect for Him. The psalmist said that he had hid God’s word in heart that he might not sin against Him (Ps.119:11). There is another aspect of the fear of the Lord that is not preached much anymore, but if we choose to ignore God’s laws, we will pay the consequences (Heb. 10:27). Romans 11:22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in [his] goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. God’s word gives us the record of His judgments in relationship to mankind. He never punished a nation without first sending a prophet to warn the people of judgment to come. When people listened, they lived. When they turned a deaf ear, they were destroyed. We live in a time of grace and God’s judgments seem to be delayed, but that doesn’t mean that He ignores our sin. We will all stand before Christ the righteous judge to be rewarded for the deeds of our flesh, whether good or bad (Ro. 4:10; II Cor. 14:10). The books will all be opened (Rev. 20:12) and all of our deeds will be revealed. We will give account for every idle word (Mt. 12:36) and that which we have whispered in secret will be shouted from the housetops (Luke 12:3). Verse 10 tells us that God’s word is to be desired over all of the riches of this world. It is sweeter than honey straight from the honeycomb. The prophet Ezekiel ate the scroll of the Lord and found it to be as honey in his mouth (Ezek. 3:1-3). Jeremiah also, ate the words of the Lord and found them to be the joy and rejoicing of his heart (Jer. 15:16). Jeremiah 15:16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts. In conclusion, the psalmist states that he has secret faults and has difficulty understanding his own errors, except that God’s word brings them to light and warns him when he is failing. He prays that he will not be dominated by presumptuous sins. If he doesn’t live carelessly and presumptuously, he will be upright and free from any great transgression. The last verse gives us a prayer that would be fitting for us all to pray continually. Psalms 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer. Additional scriptures pertaining to the word of God.
