By Faith, We Overcome the World 1John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, [even] our faith. In I John 2:15 John defines the world as, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. Without going into great detail, I would say that this covers anything and everything that is opposed to God’s absolute rule and reign in our lives. Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Our faith rejects the philosophies and practices of this world and causes us to hope for the fulfillment of the kingdom of God. We reject the empty words of political leaders who promise to restore utopia here on earth while rejecting God’s word and promoting such things as abortion on demand and so called equal rights for homosexuals. God is not mocked. If we sow to the flesh, we will reap the corruption of the flesh. But, if we sow to the Spirit, we will of the Spirit reap life everlasting (Gal. 6:8). I John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. Psalms 2:1-6 tells us that the heathen are raging and the people are imagining a vain thing. The kingdoms of this world are united together against our Lord and His Christ. They desire to be absolutely free of any godly restraints in the way that they conduct their affairs. God just laughs at their foolishness. He has set His King upon His holy hill in Zion. Hebrews 12:26-29 tells us that the Lord is going to shake heaven and earth. All that can be shaken will be cast out, so that the unshakable things can remain. Because we have been privileged to receive the unshakable kingdom of God, we must serve Him in an acceptable manner with reverence and godly fear, for He is a consuming fire. Jesus said that in the last days we would see distress of nations with perplexity (Luke 21:25). I believe that we are seeing all of these scriptures being fulfilled daily. Governments are out of money and they can’t print it fast enough to keep up. Folks are losing their homes and their jobs. I would say that the world economies are certainly being shaken. But the believer, who has been born again of God’s Spirit knows not to despair. Our God is doing the shaking and everything that opposes His kingdom will be destroyed. We will overcome all of the adversity of this world because of our faith. We have faith in who Jesus is, He is Almighty God robed in flesh. I would rather trust His word than the latest sound bites out of Washington. We have faith in the words that He spoke. He said that heaven and earth would pass away but that His words were eternal and would never pass away Mt. 24:35). We can take heart, knowing that our God is in control of it all. Our faith looks beyond the temporal things of this world and causes us to cry out, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven” (Mt. 6:10). Be encouraged friend and look up. It’s all in the hands of Jesus. Who decides what is right and wrong in the world? Who has the authority to define morality for all of creation? It is not the courts, congress, the media, public opinion, the "politically correct" police, the "tolerance" brigade or even the church. The only answer has been, is and always will be Jesus Christ.
