The Only Thing That Matters Is Eternity In Luke 21:25-28 Jesus told us that prior to His coming, there would be distress of nations with perplexity. Men’s hearts would fail for fear of things coming upon the earth. But, when we see these things begin to take place, we can look up, knowing that our redemption is near. This week has been full of unsettling news, to say the least. Iran fired a few test rockets, with the message that these could easily land in Israel, and the price of oil jumped again. We all know the results of that. The financial markets look like they are about to tumble and a lot of folks are getting nervous. Folks look at their IRAs and 401Ks and wonder where the money went. On the political scene, we see that the conditions spelled out in Ezekiel 38 & 39, for the war of Gog and Magog against Israel and realize that this could happen at any time. Ezekiel named the countries who would come against Israel, chief of whom is Iran and Russia. If Iran is attacked to destroy their nuclear capability, I believe that it may well be the beginning of that war. How much will your IRA or 401K be worth when this happens? That would be enough to drive us to despair, except: We’ve read the back of the book. We know the One who is restraining the forces of hell. His name is Jesus and He lives in our hearts. He will continue to restrain these forces until He lifts His Spirit from the earth (II Thes. 2:7). In Mark 8:36-37, Jesus made it clear that nothing matters but eternity: Mark 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? 37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? While we obviously are concerned about the current economic news, we don’t want to be like the rich man who felt that his soul could rest in ease because of all the earthly provisions that he had in store. God simply asked a question of him that should be an admonition for us all. Luke 12:20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-21 about our earthy treasures? If they don’t rust and corrupt somebody will steal them (Be they street thugs or the white collar type.) Matthew 6:19 ¶ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: However, our treasure is in heaven and come what may, that’s where our heart is. Matthew 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Once again: Nothing matters but where we spend eternity. We used to sing an altar chorus. “You’ve got to live forever somewhere. With God and the angels or the demons is hell, but you’ve got to live forever, somewhere.” I choose the former and I’m sure that you do also. I Corinthians 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen [are] temporal; but the things which are not seen [are] eternal.
