Every Word and Deed in the Name of Jesus

James 3:2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same [is] a perfect man, [and] able also to bridle the whole body.

Yes, we often offend those about us and we often offend our Lord. We fight a constant battle between our old unregenerated man and the new man of the Spirit that we received at our new birth. The apostle Paul acknowledged this conflict that resides in each of us.

Romans 7:19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

Paul did not state this as an excuse for unholy or loose living. He tells us how to resolve our conflicts in:

Romans 8:1 ¶  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

In Colossians 3:17 we read:

Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, [do] all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

In Word or Deed: Pretty much covers all that we do and say  every waking hour of the day. We are not to have one type of speech around our church friends and another around those outside of the church.  The world can readily discern the difference and our praise in the church will ring hollow.

Sad to say that in everyday life we constantly hear the language of the street in TV and even on the front pages of our newspapers. This affects us to where course speech is often common even in the church.

We also remember the apostle’s admonition concerning sound speech.

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

I remember some of our early Sunday school teaching such as: Before I say anything about another, I should check that it is kind, true, and necessary. That would certainly reduce a lot of conflict in our lives. We were also told not to go anywhere that we had to leave Jesus at the door, nor watch or read anything that would make Him blush. It stands to reason that if I am watching or reading anything that portrays disobedience to the ten commandments, I need to shut it off or lay it aside.

Jesus gave us the Golden Rule to guild our relationship to others.

Matthew  7:12 ¶ Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

All in the name of Jesus: The name of Jesus is the name above every name which God bestowed upon Him at His exaltation (Philippians 2:9-11). In other words it is simply the name of Almighty God. This name denotes all that God is, has been and will be. The power of this name was demonstrated by the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. If any word or deed of mine does not give honor to His  name and resurrection , I need to repent.

Giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Jesus told us that we can’t serve two masters (Luke 16:13). This is reiterated by the apostle Paul.

Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

When my thoughts are centered on what Jesus did for me on the cross and His promise of eternal life with Him, my heart is filled with praise and the things of this world grow dim and my flesh ceases to have control of my speech and deeds.  I find that when I am not mindful of this, problems arise. What about you?

Ephesians  5:19  Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Colossians  3:23 And whatsoever ye do, do [it] heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

Philippians  1:11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

"God is not a deceiver, that He should offer to support us, and then, when we lean upon Him, should slip away from us." - Augustine
