The Blood of Jesus
We are beginning a series on the Blood of Jesus.
An old hymn of the church ask the Question:
What can take away my sin?
And of course the reply is:
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Our good works and charity are for nought. Money and social position means nothing. We must
be washed in the blood of Jesus if we expect to be saved. As a newer song says there is more to
serving the Lord than "singing in the choir and serving on the board. You better find out what it's
all about you gotta be born again!"
When Adam sinned God clothed them with the skin of an animal, thus establishing the principal of
substitution. God gave the law in which elaborate rituals all included the shedding of blood to
cover sin. From Exodus through Deuteronomy the word "blood" appears 112 times. Just one
example is:
Leviticus 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to
make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the
soul.
Hebrews restates the principal of sins only being remitted by the sheding of blood.
Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding
blood is no remission.

The 12th chapter of Exodus shows us the principal that without a blood covering, we are subject to
the wrath of God. However God made an absolute promise that if He sees atoning blood, He will
pass over us.
Exodus 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the
firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will
execute judgment: I am the LORD. {gods: or, princes}
13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I
see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you,
when I smite the land of Egypt. {to destroy...: Heb. for a destruction}

Abraham understood the principal of substitution. He was willing to offer his only son in
obedience to God. He looked ahead by faith to the time when the Lord God would provide
a perfect sacrifice.
Genesis 22:7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am
I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
{lamb: or, kid}
8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went
both of them together.
John the Baptist identified Jesus as that perfect Lamb.
John 1:29 . The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb
of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. {taketh away: or, beareth}
John 1:36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

people.
7. All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head,
saying, {shoot...: Heb. open}
8. He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he
delighted in him. {He trusted...: Heb. He rolled himself on}{seeing...: or,

Isaiah saw the suffering of Jesus the Lamb.
Isaiah 53:3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and
we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. {we
hid...: or, he hid as it were his face from us: Heb. as an hiding of faces from him, or, from
us}
4 . Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him
stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the
chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
{wounded: or, tormented}{stripes: Heb. bruise}
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the
LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. {laid...: Heb. made the iniquity of us all to
meet on him}

God sees us as justified (declared righteous) because of the blood of Jesus.
Isaiah 53:10 . Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou
shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and
the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. {thou...: or, his soul shall make an
offering}
Jesus is pleased to have made the sacrifice for us!
Isaiah 53:11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my
righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the
strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the
transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the
transgressors.

The Blood of Jesus
Jesus foretold His suffering. We are not condemned, if we believe in the sacrifice that God
provided, His only Son. If we won't accept the sacrifice of Jesus for our sin, we are subject
to the wrath of God, and judgement awaits.
John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be
lifted up:
15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him
should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him
might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already,
because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Phillip preached "The Blood of Jesus" to the Ethiopian eunuch. His text was Isaiah 53.
Acts 8:32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the
slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
33. In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation?
for his life is taken from the earth.
34. And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet
this? of himself, or of some other man?
35. Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto
him Jesus.

Peter magnifies upon the preciousness of the Blood and exhorts us to appreciate
its value.
1 Peter 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver
and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish
and without spot:
20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest
in these last times for you,
21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory;
that your faith and hope might be in God.
22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love
of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which
liveth and abideth for ever.

God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

by whom we have now received the atonement. {atonement: or, reconciliation}

The Blood of Jesus
The 9th chapter of Hebrews (which should be read in it's entirety) explains how that
Jesus fulfilled the pattern established in the Old Testament. He entered as a High priest,
into the heavenly tabernacle and placed His Own Blood on the altar. We will be judged as
to what we did with the sacrifice that Jesus freely made for us.
23 ¶ It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should
be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices
than these.
24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the
figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy
place every year with blood of others;
26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but
now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice
of himself.
27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look
for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Scripture tells us that he was a lamb slain from the very foundation of the world.
It was at Calvary that this was an accomplished fact.
Because He died for us, we can live. Because of the Blood of Jesus,
we will live eternally with Him.
We will ever praise Him for the great gift of His sinless blood.
Revelation 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open
the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every
kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
